    Program Overview

The Foster Grandparent Program is a stipend volunteer program that provides volunteer opportunities to limited-income individuals age 55 and over that connects generations with children in need to improve educational outcomes.

Our volunteers serve as classroom grandparents who are mentors and positive role models at local non-profit organizations such as public and private schools, Head Starts, daycares, and child development centers, in addition to after-school programs. They help, guide, and assist children by developing skills in literacy, language, math, and cognitive development, as well as improving essential social and emotional intelligence.

Now, more than ever, our children need additional support to help them thrive.  Help us make a difference in the lives of children in your community by becoming a volunteer or host organization. You will have a unique and rewarding experience by providing children with the building blocks of success in development, learning, and life skills.

We are currently looking for volunteers to participate in the program as well as non-profit child-serving organizations to host our volunteers in our 6 county region that includes:  Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, and Washington counties.

The goals of the program include:

    • Enable low-income persons aged 55 and older to remain physically and mentally active and to enhance their self-esteem through continued participation in needed community services.
    • Enable children with exceptional needs or special needs to achieve improved physical, mental, emotional, and social development.
    • Provide a stipend or other benefits that enable individuals to participate as Foster Grandparents without cost to themselves.
    Eligibility Requirements
Open to volunteers age 55 and over who can serve between 15 to 40 hours a week.

Give consent to complete and pass the required background checks.

Be capable, with or without reasonable accommodation, to serve special needs or at-risk children without detriment to either him/herself or the children served.

Agree to comply with policies and procedures set forth by sponsoring and funding agencies.

Meet income eligibility guidelines specified by the federal regulations to receive a stipend.
